Te’o attended middle school and played for Honolulu’s exclusive coed Punahou School. With outstanding play at the start of his varsity career in 2006, Te’o was chosen as a sophomore for the second-team all-state roster.
Even though Te’o was only a junior in 2007, the Honolulu Advertiser named him among the state’s best and Gatorade state players of the year. He was named to the state’s first team despite collecting 400 rushing yards and ten touchdowns as a running back, 90 tackles, and five sacks on defence.
On 5 September 2009, Te’o made his collegiate debut against Nevada at the beginning of the second defensive series early in the second quarter. He made his first collegiate tackle on his third snap, stopping Wolf Pack quarterback Colin Kaepernick after he gained 11 yards on third and 15.
Te’o earned his first collegiate start in the Irish’s game against Purdue after playing in his first three games but not starting any of them.
He participated in all 12 games during his rookie campaign, finishing with 63 tackles, ranking him third among all Notre Dame first-year students, behind Ross Browner and Bob Golic.
After declaring for the NFL draft in 2013, Te’o was selected by the San Diego Chargers 38th overall in the second round of the NFL Draft. He inked a four-year rookie deal with the Chargers with guaranteed money and a signing bonus.
Though injuries restricted his playing time in some seasons, Te’o established himself as a reliable linebacker throughout his tenure with the Chargers.
